Orissa Pattachitra
Artists have kept Orissa Pattachitra a living art through the years. The word derives from the Sanskrit words Patta, meaning cloth, and Chitra, meaning illustration or picture. These artisans created colorful art pieces to offer as gifts to the pilgrims who visited the Jagannath shrine in Puri. Pattachitra is an inside-out art form that depicts detailed mythological scenes and oral tales in vibrant mineral colors. This art becomes more than just a decoration, for it lives through an entire culture of India; when you place it somewhere in your house, it will take you into the ancient tales of the life of Krishna, of Vishnu’s incarnations, to epic stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata. This finery of details and great historical importance makes it an evergreen treasure for every homestead.
