Assam Pani Mateka Craft
The invasive water hyacinth plant, called Pani Mateka in Assam. Pani Mateka Craft is introduced to make environmentally beneficial items, including paper, bags, wallets, and mats. By eliminating the damaging weed from wetlands, this creative trade helps preserve water and revitalize the environment, while providing rural artisans, especially women, with sustainable means of living. A Geographical Indication (GI) status has been awarded to the craft in recognition of its cultural value and sustainability.
