Bhagalpur Silk Chadar

Bhagalpur, a district in Eastern Bihar, known for its rich historical legacy, is located on the banks of the Ganga River. An age old custom in the area is silk weaving. This natural form of embroidered silk fabric traces its existence and emergence way back to the Vedic Age. It is admired for its distinctive silk textiles, known as Tusser silk. The fabric is made from threads that are created from tussar cocoons and are colourfully dyed. Due to its supremely fine quality it is also known as Queen of all fabrics.

Due to the high quality and widespread use of silk fabrics on the domestic and international markets, the city has been given the nickname “Silk City.” The larvae of various species of silk worms from the moth genus Antheraea are used to make tussar silk, also known as kosa silk. Tussar is prized for its luxurious texture and intrinsically rich deep gold hue.
